Electric vehicles are becoming more and more common on the roads of North Charleston and Mount Pleasant. This is due, in part, to advancements in EV battery technology. Electric vehicle range has jumped dramatically in recent years, making EVs a smart pick for many drivers looking to lower their carbon footprint. In this guide, we take a closer look at your electric vehicle battery options on the market today.
EV battery technology varies based on whether you drive an all-electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. In most cases, you can expect to get at least eight years or 100,000 miles out of your EV battery. However, some batteries can last as long as 12 to 15 years in moderate climates.
There are four main types of batteries used in electric cars: nickel-metal hydride, ultracapacitors, lead-acid, and lithium-ion. See what sets these electric vehicle battery types apart below.
Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries — You’ll most likely see this type of battery in hybrid-electric vehicles. However, some EVs feature them, too. What are the characteristics of nickel-metal hydride batteries?
Ultracapacitors Batteries — This type of battery is mainly used as a secondary storage device in electric vehicles. The purpose is to help electrochemical batteries level their load. They also deliver added power when accelerating and during regenerative braking.
Lead-Acid Batteries — You will only find this type of battery in an electric vehicle because they’re designed to supplement other battery loads. They’re inexpensive, safe, reliable, and high-powered. However, they tend not to last as long and don’t do as well in frigid temperatures. High-powered batteries are currently in development.
Lithium-Ion Batteries —This is the most common type of EV battery. They’re used because of their high power-to-weight ratio, excellent temperature performance, and high energy efficiency. They have the ability to store a lot of energy for their weight. This is important because it allows you to drive more on a single charge.
